If you’re looking for a unique, easy-to-care-for reptile with loads of personality, the Paroedura pictus, commonly known as the Madagascar Ground Gecko, might just be your next favorite pet. Native to the island of Madagascar, these small terrestrial geckos are known for their striking patterns, big expressive eyes, and active nighttime behavior. At Homestead Exotics, we love introducing people to lesser-known species that make amazing pets—and Paroedura pictus definitely fits the bill!
Paroedura pictus are small geckos, usually reaching around 5–6 inches in total length. Their bodies are decorated with intricate bands and spots in shades of tan, brown, and cream—perfect camouflage for the forest floors of Madagascar.
They’re nocturnal, meaning they’re most active after the lights go out. You’ll often see them exploring, hunting, or interacting with their environment once the enclosure darkens.
Despite their small size, these geckos have bold personalities and are fun to observe. While they generally aren’t ideal for constant handling, they’re fascinating display animals that thrive with proper care.
A single adult can comfortably live in a 10–20 gallon terrarium, but larger is always better. A pair or trio can be kept in a 20-gallon long or larger, provided there are plenty of hiding spots and visual barriers.
Substrate:
Use a soil and sand mix or a commercial bioactive substrate to mimic their natural environment. This helps maintain humidity and allows for burrowing.
Hides & Decor:
Offer at least two hides—one on the warm side and one on the cool side. Add cork bark, leaf litter, and rocks to create a naturalistic setup. These geckos appreciate a complex environment to explore.
Temperature & Lighting:
Humidity:
Maintain 50–70% humidity, with a light misting once or twice daily. Provide a humid hide with damp sphagnum moss to aid in shedding.
Insectivorous by nature, Paroedura pictus thrive on a diet of small live insects such as:
Feed juveniles daily and adults every other day. Always dust insects with calcium and vitamin supplements to support bone health and vitality.
Provide a shallow water dish and refresh it daily. These geckos also like to lap up droplets from misting.
Madagascar Ground Geckos are curious and quick but can be a bit skittish. Gentle, occasional handling can help build trust, though they’re best appreciated as watch-and-enjoy pets rather than hands-on companions.
Whether you’re new to reptiles or an experienced keeper looking for something different, Paroedura pictus offers a great balance of beauty, simplicity, and intrigue.
At Homestead Exotics, we believe that education and proper care are key to keeping any reptile happy and healthy. The Madagascar Ground Gecko is a wonderful species for keepers who love naturalistic setups and enjoy observing the fascinating nighttime world of reptiles.
